Encopresis can be associated with physical or sexual abuse, but is also common in non-abused children and is therefore, in and of itself, not diagnostic for abuse. If sexual abuse may be a possible cause for this child`s secondary encopresis he should be evaluated by a child abuse diagnostic center.

The purpose of this paper is threefold: (a) to report an unusually high prevalence of encopresis in a sample of boys in psychiatric residential treatment; (b) to explore the possible relationship of sexual abuse to the development of encopresis in these cases; and (c) to discuss the diagnostic and treatment implications of our findings.Cited by: 28.

This study of 23 boys (ages 6 to 14) in a residential psychiatric treatment program found nine of the boys were encopretic (27 times the incidence of encopresis in the general population of boys 10-12). Seven of the nine boys had histories of sexual abuse by males, suggesting that encopresis may be a marker of sexual abuse. (DB)Cited by: 28.
